TCI in talks with Microsoft, others for digital TV standard

Microsoft Corp., Intel Corp. and other major technology companies are in negotiations with cable giant Tele-Communications Inc. to supply as many as 10 million "network computers" for the next generation of cable television, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

The deal could be valued at more than $3.0 billion, the newspaper said. The stakes in the competition are enormous, it said, as TCI's purchase may set the standard for digital TV. The purchase could go up to as many as 25 million units if TCI's network of affiliated cable companies follow suit, it said.
TCI has set Monday as the deadline for submission of technical and financial proposals, the newspaper said.

How much are the off the shelf server side apps for Red hat (commerce, html authoring such as Front Page, scripting and development such InterDev, server side product apps such as Office 97, etc.) As for the database and development tools offered, are they really of the same caliber as Visual Studio and SQL 6.5?

I have a strong feeling that you can drive the cost up significantly if you add in these tools. How can the company offer customer support and service for all of this at a price fo $60?

Justin,

> Red Hat Linux 5.0....

Red Hat Linux --- Rose-coloured Windows -- Marmalade skies; all part of the Magical Mystery Tour we affectionately call the Windows Experience. Just slip that cloud over your mind and the facts then let Bill take you down the garden path of computing. People have so many difficult decisions to make in today's society; it would make life that much simpler if we did not have to make choices in software as well. Just reboot and get on with your day, ya know...

$49.95/$4636.00? Is money all that concerns you? What about "incrementalism"? Can't have that if you keep switching brand-names at half-time. Besides Linux does not come pre-bundled with the ever-present IE, which is needed to bestill the clamourings of the masses. People do not want performance, they want OLE, ActiveX, DCOM, Direct3D, Non-compliant JVM's, NetBuei, you name it, its there. Come on you know you would trade real-time performance for push-technology any day; I know I would...

Take it easy,

Norm
