Yeah Robo, the reasons you give do seem to explain the difference between the two medians. And for the moment I can’t think of another factor.
Curious, I checked the 2013 Contest performance data and found the same difference. The median Contest portfolio was up 69.69% for 2013 as compared to just 24.81% for the median stock pick.

One possible explanation is that most portfolios had a big winner of some sort to offset the mediocre performance of most of the other stocks in the portfolio.

There are several other possible explanations of course, including the ones you cited. For example, it could simply reflect a bunch of big winning stocks vs. fewer big losing stocks - i.e. that the distribution of stock returns to date is skewed. Any time the average stock is better than the median stock, you would expect the median portfolio to outperform the median stock.
