"went AWOL out into the night." That remains to be seen. "since we are not at War" We've been at something there since 11/01. Some 3400 of our troops were killed doing it, and many more were wounded. We've killed and wounded a lot more people than that. To date, we have spent over $740B for, among other things, bombs,bullets, and airplanes. Sounds like war to me. We've had a lot of wars since the last time we declared war.... Korea, Nam, Gulf, etc. We've never quibbled about the semantics. The Korean Police Action is still the Korean War, the Vietnam Whatever is still the Vietnam War. "The US has long had a standing policy of not negotiating with Terrorists" The US military has an even older policy of leaving nobody behind. Apparently the morale of the troops we are told to support is enhanced by the knowledge that the military will do its utmost to get them out of captivity, whether by use of force or exchange of prisoners, and, if they die on the battlefield or in captivity, to recover the remains, no matter how long it takes.
