could it be that the "thug culture" is a product of a viscous cycle of being born into poverty, and being born into that society that many see no way out and do what their peers do?... and lets not forget defacto slavery was still going on in this country up until the 1930s and 1940s... as a side note let's put some blame on the supposed "pro-life" fanatics who cause more unwanted pregnancies with their ridiculous fanatical opposition to even birth control... how many kids are born into this culture that otherwise wouldn't be and end up a burden on society?... children raising children, what could possibly go wrong?... of course once these kids are born the holier than though extremists want nothing to do with them, they might as well be in gaza

as for our public school system... the right wing have been on a mission to destroy it, and it seems they are winning... but in the long run everyone loses, if you can afford it you can always find a nice private school... but only investing in the future of a privileged minority of children is a ridiculous recipe for long term disaster

and this is all happening while the richest 1% get richer, corporations and wall st are doing better than ever but Republicons and teacons say we can't even raise the minimum wage, or raise taxes on extreme wealth... supposedly we can't afford to invest in our future because the rich need to get even richer... what a plan!

Beware, fellow plutocrats, the pitchforks are coming

Nick Hanauer is a rich guy, an unrepentant capitalist — and he has something to say to his fellow plutocrats: Wake up! Growing inequality is about to push our societies into conditions resembling pre-revolutionary France. Hear his argument about why a dramatic increase in minimum wage could grow the middle class, deliver economic prosperity ... and prevent a revolution.

Fascinating comments, Kate. I don't hear anything like that, as you might guess, in my corners of NJ, the northeastern section. And most particularly in the groups I hang out with. My town votes about 80% Dem and I participate in a good many civic activities and have friends there. We have very good suburban schools. I've been on the local board of ed. The public education concerns are that the various charter schools will drain money away from public schools. So far hasn't happened here. Again, because the schools are quite good.

I grew up in Texas, went to college there, and left in 1959. But even then I had no serious reading of Arkansas. Only of the university football team because it was in the same conference, the Southwest, as the University of Texas at Austin.

Came back into view when Clinton ran for the presidency in 1992. Though there was always Fullbright and Pryor's father.

although you will never see it talked about, of course.

What is really different..

The dog-whistling will keep poor whites voting against their interests which will keep the racists in charge, which will keep the subjugation of the minorities, resulting in ta-da, thugs..

It's a chicken and egg thing in all of the south...
