Taoism Buddhism and Confucianism are very sophisticated philosophies they have to draw from. Look at how sophisticated their art is. Their poetry and writings. Education is highly valued and understood in their societies. 95% of folks in the middle east think one has to be religious to be a good person. 53% in the US do, but only 14% feel that way in Asia. So they are not looking to religion to provide the answers, but to education. When Steven Chu, noble prize winner for physics went to Asia he said he was treated like a rock star and here people do not even know who he is. The African American society has been torn asunder for 400 years. Slavery, chain gangs, segregation, racism and not even allowed to read until recently and pervasive hard core racism which included not only great fear, but constant denigration and lack of good employment and support. That sort of behavior would demoralize anyone. Where is that first generation of educated blacks who can teach their children? We need to help them get that first generation. It is relatively easy for an Asian to work on self actualization given their tradition of the search for meaning and wisdom, but very difficult for African Americans who have nothing left of their original cultures which was replaced by being beaten up for 400 years and everything taken from them. I think we all fail to understand just how much damage we have done to African Americans and then to ask them to just shake it off is not realistic. On a bright note African American women are going to college 2 to 1 over Black males. Just more proof of women's superiority :>). They can then start teaching their children. I barely made it out of Richmond and I had every break in the world. A smart mother, lilly white with blond hair, a genius kid moving in next door who mentored me for a decade and still I was late getting into just a community college. I really doubt I could have gotten out if I had been Black. All they need is some help and they can prosper. Same with the Latinos. <<There is something really wrong with black society in the inner city. Poor Asians come here and do just fine. They start in ghettos, and then...they leave. For the most part they do not become thugs (though there are some Asian gangs). So what the black community really needs to do is step up, and not give in to every one of the worst possible choices they could make. Is poverty at work? Sure. But Asians face poverty, and so do Hispanics. And no one has made a bigger mess of entrenched pockets of poverty than blacks. And no, "de facto" slavery isn't going to do it. That's really not much of an excuse any more. listen to Sharpton. He finally seems to get the responsibility side of the equation. And of course, let's throw some social services at the issue, but NOT while the black community isn't willing to pull the weight of reforming itself. That's like trying to do "regime change" in Iraq. You've got to have a buy in from the folks you try to help. Without that, money is wasted.
