The only real reason I can see for your scenario is as a way to break cellphone addiction.
I see it as the opposite. There's no longer much of a distinction between TV, desktop computer, laptop computer, tablet, and cellphone... they all connect to the same accounts, access the same information, and in many cases, run the same applications. It's just a matter of jumping to the form factor that is most convenient given the situation you're in. Sitting at a desk? No harm in having a large fixed screen. Sitting in bed? Tablets can work great. Out shopping? Phone might be perfect. Going running? A watch is probably best. Choice. As the years have passed, people are *more* connected, not less, and it's not just because of phones. It's because of the total time spent on all of these form factors combined. If watches become a more practical way to stay connected, maybe they'll result in phone use dropping 25%, but they could add 30% to connected time... a net gain.

I've heard the term "dumb walking" used for people who are not watching where they are going while staring at a phone screen. Lots of people have died walking into traffic. Just recently here in SD a 16 year old walked off a curb and was flattened by a semi. She walked right into it... her brother tried to grab her but it was all over in an instant.

Since then I've observed other behaviors related or worse...

• People walking into traffic without looking... I wonder if this is related to the mindset of unawareness of the reality around you when staring into a cell phone

• Dumb skateboarding... I'm seeing more and more of this... particularly at the boardwalk in Pacific Beach but occasionally I see these guys in the middle of streets

• Dumb bike riding... this one seems particularly dumb in that bike riders are so fragile even when aware

• Dumb driving... don't need to say much about this... potential to kill other people

slacker,

with excessive use posing potential risks for academic performance,
Wow! No wonder they spend so much time on them. Now if it posed a risk to academic performance that would be a whole other thing.

10 hours a day? Doing what? There is absolutely nothing that I would want to do for 10 hours a day but if I had to make a list, using my cell phone wouldn't even be on that list.

I hope these people don't breed. Imagine the result, that is if it lived. Most likely it would die from starvation or neglect.
