Wilhelmshaven is the big port South of Hamburg, that would be the one.

Germany has always been the home of a strong but still latent anti American sentiment and that became obvious to me when I moved there in 1974.

Anti American makes Ivan (these days: Vladi) look better, right?????

Yes, I know this sounds crazy, but it is so true.

Looking for the background for this, comparing Japan with Germany long ago came to my mind, since both of them were seriously beaten by the US in WW II.

Now here the fact of interest comes in, that I have never detected any anti US sentiment like that in Japan anywhere! Does not exist!!!

I have my own theory about how come, but that will be subject for another discussion.

The Japanese don't have and never did have any illusions about the true character of the Soviet or Russia nation and their plans.

But then again, the Soviet occupation of the Northern Territories (Kurrile Islands), which took place AFTER the Japanese capitulation, truly left some serious tracks not to be easily forgotten.

Yeah, I had no idea that fracking was a real possibility in Germany until recently. Very stupid that they have been sitting on their hands and jawboning instead of moving forward.

Part of it is the natural trend of a democracy to not really do anything until there is a crisis. Why spend money now when you can just kick the can down the road? Another part is that, in my opinion, Germany thought they had tamed Russia and could use them to forge a greater EU that is independent of the US. With Germany in the driver seat, of course. That could have worked, too if they had some other leader than Putin. Virtually anyone else would have seen the advantages of a greater EU that spanned much of Eurasia. Entice China into the fold and it would be a tremendous economic bloc.

In that scenario, being dependent on Russian oil and gas is a no-brainer. It gives Russia niche to fill and keeps the oligarchs fat and happy. China could be the factory for low and mid range goods. Germany would be the luxury producer of choice. The rest of the EU would do what they were told.
