It seems that Apple made a pretty dumb mistake by not locking down an account after multiple wrong passwords were attempted. Hackers could use a simple script to guess passwords.

Yes, I agree about that. It isn't exactly a confidence builder.

<<...it must be said that the timing of this supposed iCloud hack of celebrity photos is terrible.>>

I think the timing was specifically calculated to inflict maximum damage upon Apple before the new iPhone release. Call me paranoid, but I don't believe that the timing was a coincidence. Someone was paid big bucks for the hack.

On a happier note, the scale of the 9/9 announcement is mind boggling to me. I just biked through DeAnza college today where the announcement is planned. Apple is building a 3 story building in front of a theater that already houses 4000 people. They also have seem to have a 10 man security detail around the construction site around the clock, so I assume there are secrets in there already :).

I agree with your general point about the perception of Apple, but it must be said that the timing of this supposed iCloud hack of celebrity photos is terrible. I can guarantee we are going to get a ton of articles highlighting the risks of mobile security over the next week...just in time for Apple to ask people to trust them that their mobile payments platform is safe.
The perception that Apple is safe is so strong that it isn't impacting the stock much. There will be a lot of excitement leading up to the product announcements and I don't think investors are really going to stop and focus on the details of the iCloud vulnerability. It's a serious one (I know first hand, as I have business ventures that deal with this space), but it's also easily corrected if brute force was the mechanism used. That said, I do think the recent optimism is a bit frenzied, so I opened a put position a few minutes ago ~103.70. My last two were complete losses, so hoping my timing is better this time! (For the couple of people who keep asking me - I've had a slight net gain from my periodic AAPL option positions from the past couple of years... a couple of massive gains paired with a few modest losses. The position I took today is my largest yet.)
