I wonder what Apple was thinking in ~2007 when they standardized the size and shape of iPhone icons, knowing that iPad was soon to follow?

Could it have had anything to do with the touch area on a screen when touched by a finger? And creating a recognizable and consistent look?

Is SI intentionally not standardizing the "logos" because of Apple pre-emption or copyrights?

Perhaps they are not required now, but will be required by some future non-optional functionality soon to be unleashed?
