For whatever reason, iPhone browser share by stat counter actually decreased during the Aug-Sept-Oct months that correspond to the 5 and 5S launches in 2012 and 2013. The "spike" you see this year is the exception to the rule.
I'm talking about global mobile/tablet OS share (i.e., iOS/Android/WM/etc) in the quarter following each new release, not iPhone-only, nor the periods inclusive of the pre-release weeks. The historical pattern has been (predictably and understandably) a period of better performance spurred by the release of pent up demand waiting for the new models. In general, you can spot this from the Oct 1 - Feb 1 period for iOS each year.
