I would tend to agree with your suspicions about the institutions not playing the momentum game. They do play with a lot of money. However, they're jumping in might explain some of the bigger moves. Analyst A recommends stock, institution sees rec and wants to jump in, everyone wants to buy so their larger buys add fuel to the fire. end result - stock up 10-20% within the day.

You didn't think that momentum players would be involved on the down moves - why wouldn't they short or buy puts if it was clear the move had strength? Thanks for your comments, Joe
