Not any doubt Jews/Christians & Muslims all inherit their 'eternal life' themes from the Egyptians & day-of-judgement who had a massive preoccupation with this. No doubt ideas of firey hell & not making the grade to private-angel first-class, were adopted & incorporated too. The Egyptians set the bar very high in this dept, so all other religions rather than compete just borrowed & embellished from them.

Communism the immortality would be more akin to that colony of Quaking Aspen with the 80,000yr old root systems, in either case such beliefs do very well for creating soldiers with extreme focus & willingness to obey orders & always nasty optional deadly weapon of the suicide bomber.

And we all know that Xerxes the Persian "God King" had his 10,000 warrior elites known as the "Immortals" , who wants to fight them? Unless you are the Son of a God too....

About the fear of death ... lots of people LIKE the idea of death as an eternal dreamless sleep. Barring the separation from one's loved ones who remain behind and the potential pain involved, it's not death people are really afraid of .. it's actually eternal life dependent on a power other than oneself. "I have always (or at least since about college) thought that spirituality was a technique some people use to keep their sanity when they realize that everyone dies."

Of course, that is so. Unfortunately, when people deal with their fears in an irrational way, they become vulnerable to those shysters and charlatans who will offer to assuage those fears in exchange for donations and service of various sorts--everything from animal sacrifices to tithes to Holy Warriors. This was the beginning of the Priesthood: The threats of torture in the "afterlife", unless strict obedience and conformity was followed. And if this did not work...the reality of punishment in this life. There were always those who said, "we don't believe your stories and we don't believe you." Well, the church (and by "the church" I currently address all the brokers selling shares to heaven) had an answer for them, too. It still does...
