When I first started working as a freshman @ GMI - my coop work experience started at Flint Chevrolet manufacturing (The plant that built the first 300 53 corvettes).

I wore a yellow shirt with a blue tie as I was quality control checking some flexplates that had been red taggged for 100$ inspection.

I got called into human resources at the end of the day and told that management wore white shirts and blue ties.

They also got out some BS pictures and showed me what an acceptable haircut was as acceptable did not allow for your hair to touch your ears.

At the time the owned the car business and the biggest worry was GM having anti trust problems and would force Chevrolet out of GM.

They had all the games being played to show how powerful the ego of plant managers were.

Of course with that loss of focus the rest is history.

Focus should have been of continuous improvement and innovation.

Deming had to go to Japan to find listeners - a shame.

Mary and I are Alumni of GMI or what is now called Kettering.

GM was very good to me in that they provided my BSIA on a 5 year coop program.

I'll always be thankful for the break they gave me as a 19 year old kid from Wisconsin.
