Excellent points.

Then for individual stocks you have to like understanding diesel engines... Stocks are like sailboats you have to use two or three filters on the engines, repair sails and keep the bottoms cleaned of barnacles to be competitive. How do you know they've done this...?

This is a big reason I concentrate on just a few stocks as I get to know how they trade. You make more money buying the ones with barnacles when they get new captains who clean them up and make them competitive again. Once they are winning, take some profits and wait for the barnacles to build up again so you can buy again on sale.
