Hello Ken...

Your thoughts are very pertinent to much of my thoughts these days.
I've always wanted to visit Durango, hope to drive through some day on the way south.

Have friends in their 70-80s who get up every winter morning in the dark to go skiing in the first powder.
Have friends who couldn't wait to retire to Florida so they could spend their mornings adding to their birding lists.
Have friends who've moved out of the suburbs and purchased condo's in high rise towers to be closer in to the city.
Have friends who purchased one of those massive campers and haul around a car behind it all over the country.
A brother in law who's going to become an ex-pat and head for Central America or Mexico.
Another who wants to live on a boat and another who retired to work as a Inn keeper on St John USVI so he could live there.
Others who'll just work at what they love until they they can't...

My mother and her second husband moved into the snow belt of New England at 78 years and lived through any number of winters until each reached 96... but they'd escape after the New Years until May by heading for Washington, DC and renting a condo, where they'd both lived for most of their lives...

Our mobile society has left many retired people with many options, but also many more questions.
I don't yet know what my wife and I'll do... we have a few more years to decide, but it seems an area of concentration of friends and/or family are the most important... that support group at the local coffee shop or the group of friends on the ski slope seems to make a difference in our thinking. But my wife is all for the warm weather... so maybe I'll end up with a fishing pole on the beaches of Belize not knowing anyone or speaking the language.
