Ratan, thanks for explanations. So, "In the US all business is conducted by agreement." Is this a special sort of a free market? So, if I bought something, I still cannot do with the product whatever I wish? Say, tear it apart? Donate the box to Blue Santa? Do I owe it or not? I am confused totally here.

I disagree here with only one thing: about being a "good" product:-)) This makes a big change here - the "free" product gains more market share for the producer, and after some degree of monopolization the producer will be free to deliver products of even more questionable quality, such as W3.1, W95, Office97,...
