Paul,

I haven't heard about the speed requirements for Windows 98, but if it taxes CPU horsepower, it may help accelerate the transition to higher performance Deschute processors.

I don't think neither Windows 98 not NT 5.0 will require more horsepower than current OSs. Today's mainstream PCs (P-MMX 233) can deliver the performance easily. Do you see any killer app for the masses that would need faster CPU?

I know there are many niche products. But I what I am looking for is something that 50 million additional people would upgrade their PCs for sooner and attract new buyers.

Unless something like this happens, the whole CPU business is in trouble. The overcapacity in 1998 and beyond will kill ASPs.

Even if the market grows 15% next year, it will not help. That's only a little over 10M chips. Each AMD and Cyrix plan on increasing their output by that much. And Intel's capacity will grow at least 20-30% (my guess) as the transition to .25u continues. That's 40 - 50M in additional capacity.
