The thing is, he really knew the answer. In most states there is nothing stopping a gun owner from selling a gun to anyone who has the asking price. Unless the gun owner happens to be a registered gun dealer, that is. So it is pretty moronic to ask if the gun was legally acquired because unless it was acquired by the perp from a registered gun owner there is no way to know.

Bill knows that. He just wanted to play another round of "gotcha!"...
