I took him briefly off ignore to see what you think happened.

It was about what I expected from the towering intellect we know as Brumar. He rightly pointed out that we have a system that requires felons and the mentally ill to police themselves.

But to say that it means the gun was acquired illegally is a variation of the "no true Scotsman" argument. And is just as intellectually dishonest. Uh yeah, it was illegal for him to acquire the weapon. But there was nothing to stop him from doing it other than his desire to comply with the law. Which, as a felon, should be questionable.

It is illegal for felons to possess firearms. Yet there is no real to keep them out of their hands except through licensed gun dealers. Which might be ok if it was difficult to get them through other channels. But it is not.

It is just theater to wave your hands and claim that criminals will get their hands on guns no matter what you do when you have a system that all but has them bubble packed on the checkout aisle.

Stupid argument by stupid people.
