I love taking AMTRAK and do so when the opportunity presents.

But the problem with it is pretty simple: The thing that most makes it untenable as a passenger is precisely what is required to make it fiscally tenable. That is, lots of passengers.

I have no interest in riding a crowded train. I'm down with riding in an empty one, where there is plenty of room, quiet, no other passengers being pains in the ass, etc. But if I can't have that I'm getting in the car.

I can't help but think many people view it in the same light. What MAY be a saving grace for rail transportation is that the left wing social programs which are dragging down the economy may ultimately leave many people without cars as cars will be unaffordable to them. So, that MAY end up providing enough ridership to save AMTRAK.

I agree with that article and those things SHOULD be done.

I just don't agree with the idea of spending a $100 Billion on high speed trains that will NEVER pay for themselves.

And where could you find a WORSE place to build high speed trains than California???? The earthquake epicenter of the U.S.?

That kinda exemplifies what's WRONG with government. The money they spend isn't THEIRS and they don't have to worry about whether a venture will be successful. They get their salaries and pensions anyway.
