The cloud is not practical for huge video files over 1GB +, it takes too long to upload. Faster to copy to an external drive.

Using the cloud for data storage is obviously the newer way to go as the price comes down and the facilitation improves, but it remains too slow for very large files. I do use the cloud for photos and music where the advantage of sharing and downloading to a remote device such as a tablet or phone is cool. Despite great improvement in encryption I remain hesitant to send my personal financial data off to a remaining unknown, thus external drive backups are more comfortable for me. Yes they can be stolen or lost, but with password protection it's unlikely to be at any bigger risk than your entire computer.

I don't comprehend any resistance to imaging a drive for recovery if needed versus starting over with downloading backups and restoring and installing programs. Bottom line would be just how much data your computer contains and how important it is to the user. Like most people I probably have too much stuff on my computers even though I do regular maintenance and cleanups. I can usually do a backup image, unattended, in 20 minutes. Voila!
