NextLevel Systems, Inc. Ships 500th Digital Headend

NextLevel Demonstrates Its Leadership in Digital Deployment With More
Than 24 Million North American Homes Passed

ANAHEIM, Calif., Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- NextLevel Systems, Inc. (NYSE: NLV - news)
announced today that it has passed another milestone in its North American interactive digital cable
deployments with the shipment of the 500th digital headend system. With more than 500 digital
headend systems and more than 600,000 digital interactive consumer terminals shipped to date, this
latest shipment further strengthens NextLevel's position as the world leader in the digital cable
marketplace.

This shipment marks another important milestone in the deployment and market acceptance of
NextLevel's MPEG-2 digital interactive system. The deployment of the most recent digital headend
system brings the total number of North American homes passed by NextLevel's digital systems
beyond the 24 million mark.

NextLevel introduced its standards-based MPEG-2 digital system in 1996, and has been pursuing
an aggressive schedule of digital deployments to a number of operators, including TCI, Shaw,
Comcast, Cox, Adelphia, GTE, Bell Canada and others.

''This most recent landmark represents NextLevel's commitment to providing operators with the
most advanced digital technology, enabling them to increase channel capacity, provide superior
picture quality and add the latest interactive services,'' said David Robinson, Vice President and
General Manager of NextLevel's Digital Network Systems Group. ''These aggressive deployments
help the industry and us to further enhance our leadership position with digital systems passing more
than 24 million homes.''

NextLevel's current generation set-top terminal, the DCT-1000, is designed to provide real-time
interactivity, as well as a standards-compliant platform with open application interfaces (API). As
part of NextLevel's MPEG-2 digital system, the DCT-1000 enables system operators to provide
enhanced picture and sound quality, expanded channel counts, and the latest interactive options,
including Web browsing and other high-speed Internet access services. NextLevel's advanced
interactive digital set-top, the DCT-5000, scheduled to be available next year, offers additional
interactive capabilities such as TDMA return path, a built-in MCNS compliant cable modem and
additional processing and graphics capabilities. The interoperability of these products will allow
operators to seamlessly deploy the DCT-5000 into their existing NextLevel digital systems.
