Coyote's digital switching system switches may lack sufficient "marketability" and "usefulness" as the class action suit asserts, although I was somewhat impressed to see the last three months have netted a not-too-shabby $2.3 MM in orders.

SATTEL & YURIE Demo "Any-To-Any" Switched ATM VOICE
sattelcom.com
New Orleans, LA, June 2,1997 - SATTEL Communications, a subsidiary of Diana Corporation (OTC:DNAK), and Yurie Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:YURI) are demonstrating a Hybrid CO/ATM Switch designed to consolidate and concurrently switch "any-to-any" voice, data and video traffic across public and private ATM networks. The demo pairs SATTEL's Distributed Switch Server (DSS) with Yurie's LDR ATM access equipment. By unleashing switched ATM voice, the Hybrid CO/ATM Switch illustrates the benefits of flattening the traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN), revealing new opportunities for competitive telcos, Internet service providers (ISPs), private network operators, cable companies, and new entrants to the increasingly competitive telecom industry. The Hybrid CO/ATM Switch has the potential to redefine the way service providers operate, introducing ATM and its inherent bandwidth, equipment, and operations saving to the PSTN equation. Most incumbent switching systems are built upon large, elaborate and expensive Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) hierarchies, designed for regulated monopolies, comprising a range of switches from Class 1 International Gateways to Class 5 End Office equipment. This Class-based switching framework requires both the segregation of voice and data traffic onto separate networks and the often inefficient back-hauling of voice, modem, and fax calls to a distant Class 4/5 switch. Because the existing system relies on TDM's dedicated bandwidth, it inevitably squanders bandwidth during periods of light traffic in order to handle periods of greater demand. The new hybrid switch demonstrated by SATTEL and Yurie simplifies network operations through ATM. By switching voice traffic over an ATM network, today's carriers can consolidate all traffic types onto a common network, thus streamlining network operations and optimizing bandwidth efficiency through ATM's dynamic bandwidth allocation. And because the new hybrid configuration bypasses much of the TDM hierarchy, carriers adopting the Hybrid CO/ATM Switch will limit their equipment costs by reducing the requisite number of multiplexing steps. Such flattening of the network also preserves bandwidth normally lost under the current system due to the almost inevitable imperfect mapping from one transmission media to the next. "By connecting a CO switch to an ATM network, we can kiss the old phone system architecture good bye," said Dan Taylor, senior analyst, Aberdeen Group. "Many of the aggressive carriers have paid lip-service to these types of networks. The SATTEL/Yurie combination is an excellent first step to combined multimedia networks. The Hybrid CO/ATM Switch coexists in today's sophisticated SS7 signaling networks and is a simple and cost effective way for new telecom players to become facilities-based carriers. These competitive carriers cannot cost-justify building separate voice and data networks. The SATTEL/Yurie combo significantly lowers their cost of entry into an increasingly competitive marketplace," said Taylor. The Hybrid CO/ATM Switch will be particularly beneficial to competitive telcos facing costly interconnect agreements, ISPs trying to break into voice services, enterprises looking to take advantage of lower tariffs on local loops, developing countries starting with little or no telecom network infrastructure, and new carriers hoping to avoid costly overlay networks. The SATTEL/Yurie collaboration and resulting Hybrid CO/ATM Switch grew out of SATTEL's effort to integrate third party hardware and software into the company's flexible Switch Server Architecture (SSA). "SATTEL and Yurie are working together to provide products that support a broad mix of voice, data and video services," said Dan Latham, president and chief operating officer, SATTEL Communications. "Our goal is to enable customers to efficiently and effectively switch voice, data and video traffic over ATM public and private networks." "An additional benefit of this joint effort is how it leverages and spotlights ATM's voice capabilities," explains Kwok Li, president and chief operating officer of Yurie Systems. "Although ATM itself was conceived to handle voice, video, and data traffic on a common network, the truth is, most ATM equipment vendors focus nearly exclusively on data applications. Yurie has long recognized the opportunities and savings that voice over ATM brings to service providers and network operators, and constructing the hybrid switch with SATTEL unveils an often overlooked cost-effective ATM alternative." Pricing and Availability The Hybrid CO/ATM Switch is configuration dependent and handles 100 to 10,000 lines. Pricing starts at $200,000 for a system that supports voice and data applications. The Hybrid CO/ATM Switch is available now.
