I know that there is a better narrative out there specifically about the Germans and the Greeks, but I don't know offhand where it is, and don't have time right now to look for it.

You inadvertently pointed out the basic problem with the European economy:

Oh my gosh, I never meant to suggest that Germany's hands are pure. BUT Germany was doing what was in Germany's best interest.
Or more clearly, Germany was doing what was in the German banks' best interest.

Europe's problem is that it is not a unification of federated states. In the US, one state's banks are not responsible for bolstering economic or catastrophic problems in other states - that's a US government problem. A poor state in the US reaps most of the "welfare" funds. Europe needs to be more cohesive and work out a way to help its poorer countries advance economically - and bail them out if necessary. I think there needs to be an all Europe tax for common purposes.
