Do both of these systems have backwards compatability with GSM? As someone said earlier, Third generation systems are nice in the abstract, but in reality they will only happen in some countries. Not everyone is willing to pay for a 5MHz link when they only need voice! That is the beauty of a wideband IS-95, they can give you bandwidth as you need it. All they need to do is if you feel the need for speed they combine 3 channels and say "go at it" for 3 times the cost. Besides, how fast can you go on a modem with IS-95? As I remember it 9600 Baud. That is plenty fast enough for the limited applications in the current Q-phone, scheduling Unwired Planet, etc...
