Yup,

It's very cheap to do today.

Having personally designed and built out a number PV systems over the last thirty plus years it's incredible how the costs have dropped.

Especially the last ten years or so.

I own a "off grid" home that has generated virtually all of it's electrons from PV's the last twenty four years.

(plus a dash... of windpower)

No PV failures and no generator required.

Just pure silence and no moving parts.

Not to mention, no pollution!

Eric

P.S.

Vastly more reliable than any grid!

Al,
There is huge growth and growing capacity...which is why prices have dropped so much.
Prices have dropped so much because there is so much supply. China in particular is manufacturing these panels like crazy and virtually dumping them in the global markets.
