I am glad you contacted Stacie. Her answer is what I would have expected her to say but I think it best that you get it from her. From a layman's point of view, the ThinPrep should really lend itself to automated reading since it is a higher quality preparation. The only disadvantage I see for an automated equipment manufacturer is that it might be too easy and thus invite lots of competition.

I think her answer re the 75% rejected slides also makes a lot of sense. Accumed, the way I see it, is more of a conventional information technology company and this part of the job .... i.e. supporting the cytotechs should be right up their alley. This also is good news for the cytotechs themselves. The philosophy that I have heard expressed is not to eliminate the techs but to expand the number of Pap tests conducted. If this can be done in a way that is less hard on the techs and allows them to use their professional qualifications more fully then it is a win/win situation. Job performance aids are being used almost everywhere so why not in the medical laboratory? It will be an exciting future for all concerned and most important of all good for the consumer.
