Sputnik was late 1957. The Truman doctrine could have been declared a fact 10 years earlier, period.

And as for delivery systems, it was the Russians who got Sputnik into orbit first.

That was because we weren't serious about space. We were serious about rockets for warfare. We got very good at that. But for space, we had a patchwork of efforts from the Army and the Air Force who were in competition with each other.

That changed with Sputnik.
