And as for delivery systems, it was the Russians who got Sputnik into orbit first.

That was because we weren't serious about space. We were serious about rockets for warfare. We got very good at that. But for space, we had a patchwork of efforts from the Army and the Air Force who were in competition with each other.

Yeah, but the record books still show Russia first when it comes to delivering a satellite into space. Pretty impressive for a quasi first world/3rd world country.
