4finger- Besides the CEO (from Nynex), the direct sales force, the installed base in Fortune 1000 and possibly the presence of the Spectrum management software, what is it about Cabletron's position that gives them a unique position ith integration of Telco and data networks. Are there particular technologies, switches, software, that puts CS in a unique position to provide this integration?

The main Carriers for data Transport viz the Telcos have an upper speed bound the speed of light. As and when TELCO's are constrained they either have to lay extra lines or go in for on and off wave multiplexing. On the other hand the Home owner,SOHO,ISP's and Enterprise are all using transient lower speed technologies mainly because of cost and the lower initial traffic densities. hings have now changed. Presently traffic on the lower speed nets has increased 10 fold compared to 3 yrs ago. In addition the demands for Multimedia,Conference calling,Data Mining and 3D Simulation have grown exponentially. In brief, all lower layers to stay competitive have to retool to higher speeds. For many, the transition to ATM/Fibre will be in steps. IP Switches with open architecture will enable them to do just that. I fully concur that Covergence is inevitable. The only challenge to Convergence can come from the Wireless world. Fortunately that Technology is not as yet competitive with copper or fibre.
