5:32 DJS Japan, EU Semiconductur Makers Agree On Antidumping Measures

TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- Japanese chipmakers and their European rivals
agreed Thursday to implement measures that will prevent any dumping of dynamic
random access memory, or DRAM, or flash-memory modules on the retail level,
the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Thursday.
Semiconductor manufacturers on both sides will monitor prices and
present evidence to authorities should dumping allegations arise.
The Electronic Industries Association of Japan reached the agreement on
memory chips with its counterpart, the European Electronic Component
Manufacturers Association.
Each chip maker is to monitor itemized data on its production costs and
domestic and import prices. Neutral bodies will be enlisted to store the data,
the newspaper said.

Let's put the recent selloff in perspective. The SOX index is trading at '95 levels yet these companies are more profitable than ever. IMHO, we are going to see one hell of a rally in early '98, once the panic over SEA subsides and people realize that SEA accounts for only 22% of chip consumption.

Gene, normally (see chart geocities.com )
btb turns up this time of year. You can explain it away by
stating that orders have grown, but shipments have grown more.
It depends on how the Street looks at things. When Sept btb was
down sightly (as is normal for Sept) there was hand wringing.
We should probably look at order volume, rather than btb.
