Jim: I do not want to dispute your argument that CPQ might have some
excessive inventory in the channel,perpahs 4-5 weeks worth. I think
they have already came out and said this problem will be worked out
by the end of 98.

I just wanted to highlight the fact that more shelf space indicate potential to sell more and that is all.

Also the following comments by IDC is worth noting, and perhaps this
is going to be major thrust of their marketing strategy somewhere in
the future, and hence the impending reduction in channels.

"IBM, Compaq will sell PCs direct via Web (12/96) - in '97, both tried to finesse their shifts to avoid channel unrest, but their direction is clear: direct sales via the Web is going to be a bigger part of their channel mix"
