4th quarter '96 to 4th quarter '97 earnings, excluding the tax benefit ,went from 9 to 14 cents or over 50%. It's usually more appropiate to look at the current quarter-although year over year is also important. (MLOG had a crummy quarter last spring which affected year over year comparisons)

good luck
