Yes, I can think of an alternative:

Microsoft is held in contempt.

More importantly, whether this happens or not, the DOJ will have renewed vigor to go after Microsoft, in a much broader scope.

Their hiring of this top-notch lawyer shows their resolve to deal with Microsoft.

Microsoft needs to act quickly to thwart the negative press they are receiving, and I think they will offer a reasonable solution to satisfy the judge's ruling, perhaps tomorrow, and by Christmas at the latest.

Li:if MSFT can defeat DOJ after it says win95 will not operate
without IE, who else can survive. MSFT put DOJ in a position that
they must pursuit this for the public (perceived or not). It's the
kind of things like the game (crab?), see who has the best lawyer,
sad to say.

I think the best route for MSFT to do is just do what the DOJ want them to do, i.e. take IE out of win95

Why caused all this unnnecessary media attention (negative media).

I am sure they will do pretty well without preinstalling in win95 or win98 unless something is hidden behind win98( something that is hidden under the sleeve, sthg that is going help MSFT advance dramatically in the browser market and so on.)
