Note that the steeply increasing spending in that graph is per pupil and after adjusting for inflation.

That's the most reasonable way to do it, I just want to point out that its not an issue of "well we have more students now", or of using inflated dollars to claim a large increase.

Per pupil real spending about doubled. Nominal total educational spending went up to about 18 times in those 40 years.
