My Toshiba Qosmio laptop has 12 GB or RAM. RAM helps.

Ram does help performance, but if your computer is slowing down that seems to indicate something else is going on. Your windows registry probably has things in it that are slowing you down. Since you just got a new drive, you might consider a fresh windows install. If you have your windows install disc you can do it that way or if you only have a factory recovery image, I would first clone the old hard drive onto the new one and then do the factory recovery on the new drive. If you have a windows setup disc, but don't have the key, you can find out what the key is with Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder, which is free. After a new install you can then transfer anything you want from the old hard drive onto the new one. Once that's done your old drive will be available to make a clone or backup image of your new installation. Sounds like a lot of work, but it's not too bad and you will be able to roll-back to your fresh-install very easily in the future.

Here's a few free cloning programs and the key finder.
