The Austin woman has been sending letters and packages of a harassing and sexually explicit nature to the Senator, despite receiving a cease-and-desist letter. She was charged with a Class B misdemeanor, and could spend up to 180 days in jail, plus a fine of up to $2,000. One of the packages allegedly contained fecal matter, according to a San Antonio Express News article by David Saleh Rauf. The woman, Mary Louise Vigil, age 52, didn’t just ignore the cease-and-desist letter; she responded with a note saying “I do not stop,” which was reportedly included in a package containing “several baby items.” The alleged harassment has been ongoing for several months, according to court records obtained by the Express News. The arrest affidavit states that Vigil sent “emails, greetings cards, and baby gifts to Senator Uresti’s office, along with hand-written letters that contained vulgar language, and at times became very sexual in nature.” One example of this lurid correspondence was a 16-page letter containing numerous sexual references, along with several invoices and a demand for the Senator’s help in “paying the bills.” After her arrest on April 9, Vigil was scheduled to appear in court before an Austin court on Tuesday. That hearing has been rescheduled to May 12. Vigil was released from jail on a $7,500 bond on April 21, according to court documents. Neither the woman’s attorney nor the Senator’s office would comment on the case, Rauf wrote. It appears that the Senator’s staff was very patient throughout the ordeal. Concerned that she might be “mentally unstable,” the Senator’s staff told DPS troopers they were unable to assist the woman. Vigil’s alleged harassment was not limited to sending letters and packages to the Senator. It appears she also used social media to further her claim of being Uresti’s wife. She claimed in at least one online post to be “Mary Louise Uresti,” according to the affidavit. She also allegedly sent a letter to the son of late U.S. Representative Henry B. Gonzalez, in which she repeated her claim to be the Senator’s spouse. “Based on Vigil’s repeated communication with Senator Uresti’s staff, and total disregard of the cease and desist letter, Vigil did thereby commit the offense of harassment against the laws of this state,” DPS special investigator Rudy Torrez wrote in the affidavit. The court records revealed Vigil was previously charged with criminal mischief stemming from a 2012 incident.
