I have a bit of a problem commenting on your post. Why? Because, while I largely agree, I also think that you're not seeing the entire picture.

Politicians as a group are self serving bastards, agreed on that. But - don't know what folks in NZ think about it, but we're in a rather real state of war. Right now, as we speak, I have little doubt that some ISIS-like characters are juggling ideas about blowing up bombs in crowded places in the US.

So, do I want us to have effective intelligence against them? You bet I do. Regrettably, whether out of stupidity - or by design - our spooks follow directions from the political correctness crowd. They are not focusing their spying on potential attackers - instead, they are spying on everyone - to avoid "stereotyping". Some crap like that. It will continue until something very serious happens, and the public will lose patience with their dumb little circus.

But - outing wholesale all the details of our intelligence operations ain't a great solution either.
