Texas Instruments-Acer Inc., one of Taiwan's biggest makers of semiconductors, said Monday that it will shut part of a factory and sell off the facility's equipment following a big drop in the price of memory chips.

...

TI-Acer said last week that it would halt production at a facility that processes 25,000 six-inch wafers at the 0.45-micron line width. The company next year will switch to more advanced eight-inch wafers cut at line widths of 0.25 microns or less, allowing it to boost productivity and lower costs.

TI-Acer said it will auction off the older equipment, which can be used profitably by companies to produce non-DRAM chips, analysts said.
