Stalin only fought the Nazis after the Nazis broke the Nazi-Soviet alliance.

bentway, it is true that without the Russians we probably would have lost the ground war in Europe.

If Hitler hadn't turned on the Russians and invaded them he wouldn't have had to fight a 2 front war and I don't think we would have even seen the Normandy invasion.

The U.S. would have just held back because the Germans would have had ALL their troops waiting to defend the coast from an invasion.

Those first 2 atomic bombs would have probably been dropped on Germany and Russia.

But, by the time those were dropped they probably would have had 20 atomic bombs or more.

The war might not have ended until 1948.

That's all hypothetical though. I'm talking about the way things actually were.

In April, 1945, we had defeated the Germans and we had the 3rd Army and a lot of other troops available in Europe. All we needed were some little instigating things to happen and we could have been at war with the Russians. NOBODY liked the Russians and everybody knew they had only joined us because they had to after their little partnership with the Nazis had gone bad.

The LEAST we could have done was to push them out of Germany and Poland and Czekoslavia. Sent them back to their Russian borders and wait for the bomb or even invaded without making the mistakes the Germans did.
