tejek is living proof of that old saying: “You can be stupid, a racist, and a leftist all at one time”

my family wasn't even in this country back then.

Half of mine neither - why I suffer no white guilt - especially since the other half fought for Ohio - have a nice infantry sword in the living room.
Look up the term dixiecrat.

They were democrats before the war and after - this guy was a democrat in 1962 and right up until he left office in 2005. An honored member of that racist party - that never bothered to kick him out. Surprised he wasn't a KKK member as well like R. Byrd.

So before you get all wee-wee'd up about a flag - just remember which party put it there.

You don't have to look it up to recognize the Dixiecrats were long gone by the time Hollings was elected in 1955 and certainly any later elections. Long gone.

They essentially lasted through less than one election cycle.

Look u the term "dixiecrat". I'm sure it will discuss how short-lived the movement was.

Does your counterpart wonder why a democrat can't win in SC today? What it says about the constituency in states like SC? And why they elect a republican whose sensibilities are the feedback she gets or doesn't get from CEO's with which she converses rather than the respect the states accords to some of its citizens for which this represents repression and racism?
And for the argument that this is not a state symbol...shit, his own post says that a politician (even if a demo/dixie crat) was instrumental in the flag flying...and today the only way that flag can come down is if the state legislation votes to bring it down...can you spell state sponsorship?

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley (R) on Tuesday said that there was no need to remove the Confederate battle flag from the Statehouse grounds because it was not an issue for CEOs, and the state had “fixed” racist perceptions by electing an Indian-American governor.

During a South Carolina gubernatorial debate, Democratic candidate Sen. Vincent Sheheen called on the flag to be retired to a museum.

“I think the people of South Carolina are tired of having an image across America that’s not truly who we are,” Sheheen explained, adding that everyone should “rally together under a flag that unites us all, the American flag, that looks toward the future, and not the past.”

Haley responded that the Confederate flag was a “sensitive issue.”

“What I can tell you is over the last three and a half years, I spent a lot of my days on the phones with CEOs and recruiting jobs to this state,” the governor noted. “I can honestly say I have not had one conversation with a single CEO about the Confederate flag.”

the slavery they supported and war they started.

Dude, my family wasn't even in this country back then.
But when you got here, you gravitated to the racist party.

RE Dixiecrat ... if Hollings who was a Democratic office holder from 1955-2005 ... 50 years! ... was a Dixiecrat, so was LBJ, Carter, Gore, and Clinton. Your party never elected put anyone but Dixiecrats in the WH from JFK to BHO, and as soon as you were old enough to vote, I'll bet you voted for all of those Dixiecrats. Let's face it ... you're a winger Dixiecrat. Heck you even joined a racist frat in college.
