Republican presidential candidates and members of Congress on Monday said they were returning or otherwise relinquishing donations from the head of a white supremacist organization whom the alleged killer of nine black churchgoers in Charleston, S.C., cited as an influence. Earl Holt III, the president of the Council of Conservative Citizens has been a prolific donor to Republicans in recent years, giving tens of thousands of dollars to a number of prominent Republicans including Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Rand Paul of Kentucky, federal disclosures show. His filings list his occupation alternately as a “slumlord” and landlord.
