I've never heard of a gator in Lake Travis, or anywhere near Austin. That report was from right next to Louisiana. I have seen cottonmouth water moccasins and rattlesnakes there. I may swim there today.

American alligators don't live in open bodies of water or rivers. They like swamps. The females need swamps to build their nests in the middle of a deeper area. Males like to dig out a deeper area also. When water levels are low, the fish and other animals concentrate in the deeper areas making it easier to feed.

If they are in a lake or river it is an accident due to flooding or other displacement. It doesn't suit their feeding habits so they are transitory only.
