KAD,

I also am in the market for a new computer, i am still operating on a 486 that i purchased in 94 for $2500, my how times have changed!
There is a really good website to price shop:

www.egghead.com

When you get to this site, there is a frame on the left that has two articles that are particularly good for the basics on computer purchases, they are how to buy computers, and how to buy monitors.
They contain the basics on "what to look for", for example EDO RAM
versus SDRAM and the basics of the monitor, such as "refresh" rate.

I have a degree in electrical and computer engineering and I even found things in these articles that are VERY useful.

The conclusion of the article on "computers" that stuck with me was this:

"every 1000 dollars that you spend, you prolong the life of you
computer another year"

What a profound statement, but you know what, its right on target!

Good Luck,

RichieH

personally, i like the 300-P2, but not sure i can cough up another 2500.

egghead was undercutting the local retailers in my area by 10% on most models, for example, last week they had the p2-300 for $2249, i have noticed this week its back up to 2499 (probaly ran out of inventory),
but they also "HAD" pretty good prices on the p2-233 and p2-266.
Heck, after righting this message, i think i am going to go back and check myself, i may have some room left on my VISA!

Chinese PC market to triple! WOW!!![South China Moring Post]

scmp.com

Do keep in mind domestic manufacturers are in the lead due to special privilages enjoyed by them. What is interesting though is that if China wants to join WTO, they will have to create a much more level playing field, and I expect some of this privilages to disappear soon, perhaps as soon as by 2000.

KAD: As for my opinion as to which computer to buy, I would say buy a Compaq or Dell with Pentium II,with min of 32 MB RAM 4-6 GB of hard disk, etc this should be good for 3 to 4 years. But for goodness sake stay away from Packard Bell. I recently bought a Compaq 4814, and 'am pretty happy with it.

Ps: if you like the India links i post now and then from a business stand point, then you would like China even better as they have about a 12 year lead on India, but if you like India for cultural reasons, you would like China equally,as you very well know both have over 5000 years of history and culture, though both are lacking in material things from a Western point of view.

Packard Bell has a poor reputation in quality and support when you have a problem. That is a very bad combination.

I know nothing of a lack of fan or heating problem with regard to Compaq. However, heat disippation is a potential problem that Compaq engineers recognize. I find it hard to beleive that they would design their PC's such that they would create a problem with heat dissipation.

KAD, buy any brand name computers, Compaq, Dell, IBM or Hwp. Its a peace of mind. Don't buy PB. A little over a year ago, I bought a PB by listening to a store clerk. It's about $200 cheaper than other brand names. Two months ago, the monitor did not work and it was out of its one-year warranty. I had to buy a new monitor. Now, the computer itself has another problem -- sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't --- all depends on its mood or my luck. I am looking for another computer now. It will be a Dell or a Compaq. Never be a PB again. Good luck with your purchase.
