REPORT: Seattle Restaurants Suffer Worse Job Loss Since The Great Recession

12:03 PM 08/10/2015

According to a report released Sunday by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), the $15 minimum wage has caused Seattle restaurants to lose 1,000 jobs — the worst decline since the 2009 Great Recession.

“The loss of 1,000 restaurant jobs in May following the minimum wage increase in April was the largest one month job decline since a 1,300 drop in January 2009, again during the Great Recession,” AEI Scholar Mark J. Perry noted in the report.

The citywide minimum wage increase was passed in June of last year. The measure is designed to increase the city minimum wage gradually to $15 an hour by 2017. The first increase under the plan was to $11 an hour in April. According to the report, Seattle restaurants have already faced severe consequences as a result. In contrast, in the six years since the 2009 financial crisis, the industry has been recovering in areas without the $15 minimum wage. “Restaurant employment nationally increased by 130,700 jobs (and by 1.2%) during that same period,” the report also noted. “Restaurant employment in Washington increased 3.2% and by 2,800 jobs.”

Reporter Beaten And Robbed While Covering #Ferguson Protests
Post-Dispatch reporter Paul Hampel was beaten, bloodied and robbed by a group of attackers as he covered the Ferguson protests Sunday night.

Hampel said he was taking photos and videos of break-ins along West Florissant Avenue shortly before he was attacked. Suddenly, he said, he was rushed from behind.

“I got swarmed, beaten down really bad,” he said.

The attackers punched him in the face, hit him in the head at least three times and kicked him in the back of the head when he was on the ground, Hampel said.

The attackers took his phone and wallet and left. Hampel headed back to the police line and encountered New York Times photographer Whitney Curtis. He told her he needed an ambulance.

Someone laid him down on the grass and he doesn’t remember much after that.

He said he suffered a concussion and was kept overnight at a hospital for evaluation. He said he also suffered a puncture wound in his knee, perhaps from glass in the parking lot.

Hampel is among several journalists who have been injured, attacked or robbed while covering Ferguson and its aftermath since the Aug. 9, 2014, fatal shooting of Michael Brown Jr.

This is Lolly Whitethighs reporting from WTF-TV on our reporter, Biff Birthwright's encounter with the Ferguson gentlemen. What happened there, Biff.
Well, Lolly. I can tell you that it's not advisable to interrupt African-American gentlemen while they work. I want to apologize to these gentlemen for:
1. My white privilege
2. My unintentional disruption of their work day
3. Any injuries they may have encountered while striking my head and face with their fists and feet.
It appears that they were in the process of re-arranging store merchandise when I rudely interrupted them. Life's lessons learned, Lolly. This is Biff Birthwright reporting from the back of Mercy Ambulance enroute to the nearest emergency room. Back to you , Lolly.
