For some years before Reagan our defense wasn't so overwhelming for the Russians. And after the USSR fell, our defense spending fell back. Remember the 'Peace Dividend?'

If Reagan's military spending was SO influential on the Russians then how come our military spending has never really influenced any OTHER Russian leader before or since Gorbachev?????

Putin and the Chinese have BOTH been thumbing their noses at us for several years now. Well, of course, Obama is a nancyboy.

Over the last 35 years we've been OUTSPENDING the next 40 Countries COMBINED on the military.

Not sure about over the last 35 years, but currently, or over the last 50 or more years, that isn't true.

our military spending has never really influenced any OTHER Russian leader before or since Gorbachev?

Assumes facts not in evidence.

Which is not to say that it was a simple matter of Reagan pushed through defense spending increases and talked tough, and so the USSR fell, where as it clearly wouldn't have without him. Reagan was only one factor. Likely a somewhat important factor, but not clearly a decisive one, and certainly not the only one.

Putin and the Chinese have BOTH been thumbing their noses at us for several years now.

Not that I think relative defense spending is the only or overwhelming factor here, but to the extent it has any relevance at all note that both Russia and China have recently been increasing their defense spending in absolute terms and relative to the US.

As for Reagan doing better. I think he would. I also think Russia and China would still be causing similar problems to the ones they are currently causing. I don't think he would have been a miracle worker.

Reagan would be following Obama's policy, while talking a lot of trash. Reagan and Obama both never got us involved in any real wars. People forget that about Reagan.
