I believe he didn't 'present' it as one, though he knew it was suspicious. Frankly, I think it's likely he was doing a hoax that would raise eyebrows but not get him in real trouble. As far as what others knew immediately, we can't know what they thought or what they were sure of. It started beeping in English class and the English teacher is the one who got the principal involved. They were right to take precautions. A kid who took a gun or knife to school would be in big trouble today even if it was a facsimile.
