Regarding the sub 1000 PC's: This has not been a great concern to me as the bill for my first Dell in 1993 was $1134 including 7% Calif tax, a color monitor, one year zero cost warrantee.
Considering that an 80 meg hard drive for an IBM cost $250 and that the fixed memory chips were much higher then, it was not far from being a $1000 item.
So I rate all the talk to be a great advertizing gimmick being
promoted to the hilt by both the vendors and the stores and it is good news for the PC industry to have more people owning them.
I am a bit concerned with giving away printers also tho,
as thats coming close to a war where there is little profit left.

Most likely, Best Buy is using their PC margin to give
away the Lexmark printer (their cost ~$80) as a deal sweetner. Remember, if the retail outlets make nothing on a PC sale,
they have a customer who has an additional habit to feed over
the next few years in terms of sowtware and accesories.
