Shouldn't we, as a society, move forward? Move away from where one had to "cheat" the tax man?

No doubt when you had to pay 90% tax on income, the incentive to cheat was massive and some might say necessary.

Can't we get a simple tax system where the incentive is to pay "reasonable" taxes relative to one's own prosperity?

He would *cheat* just past the point of legality, as best as he could determine it.
