SparQ vs. Jaz:

You are much better going for the SyQuest SparQ. It will save you bundles of cash, and it will offer the right performance and features for the needs you describe. The ONLY reason you might want to buy a Jaz is if you are interested in supporting Iomega Corp.'s bottom line. Zip and Jaz are expensive options in today's marketplace.

If your applications are for your use only, you are much better opting for non-Iomega products. They are overpriced.

Somewhat off topic:
If you're truly interested in long term storage, I recommend CD-recordable. 3-5 dollars for 650 megabytes, write once. And it has an expected lifetime of over 30 years. It's much more secure than any magnetic based technology.
Or wait for DVD recorders, but that might take a while.

Zakrosian -

SparQ or Jaz?

Well, considering price alone, for your purposes SparQ sounds like a clear winner. You would have to get the IDE version to get the speed you need for video or music editing. If you're a Mac user, you'll have to decide between Jaz and SyJet, since there isn't and will not be a SCSI SparQ.

On the other hand, SparQ's reliability still hasn't been established, so you might want to consider that. Jaz reliability has been established, although I know that Rocky will disagree.

Also think about the fact that Jaz prices will be coming down, and that disks are already available for around 90 bucks in quantities of one.

The only other factor in your decision would be whether or not you need or might want to exhange disks with anyone else. If so, you would just want to get what the people with whom you're exchanging disks have.

Zakrosian > Jaz or SparQ

If your main purpose is for storing music data then I recommend neither. Go buy a CDR or CD-RW. If money is a problem, go get a Philips CDD3610 and HP 7100i (Watch out, there is a bug in DAO mode but this will solved by flash BIOS in couple weeks). You can get the internal version for about $370 to $450. Other than the DAO problem they are very reliable burner. If price is not a problem, go get a Yamaha 4x writer. With CDR or CD-RW, you get top reliability, your CDR which cost around $2 each can store 74mins of CD quality music and keep your data intact for 30 years. You can even drop it from 3rd floor or put it near a magnet! CD-RW costs around $18 to $20 per disc but most CD-Player can't play them. My cheap Panasonic SL-S170 surprsingly will read CD-RW.

About Jaz vs SparQ
Michael has a good point on media warranty.
Allen has valid points on sharing of data between friends and SCSI option. - if most of your friends has Jaz already, then Jaz is a plus!
Rocky also right about the price advantage of SparQ. You can get 3Gig for the price of one Jaz disk right now. Hopefully I will see IOM lower the price of Jaz soon.

I never trust Jaz, Syjet and SparQ for permanent data storage becuase of the inherit problem of winchester HDD technology. Just one little shock great than 2G or put near a screw-driver with strong magnetic field..., you data will be easily in jeopardy. They are very good portable or temporary storage device. In fact, I am going to buy one in next 30 days.

PS: Panasonic will release a SCSI DVD-RAM in 98Q1 ahead of schedule for $800. Media is around $30 for 2G and $40 for 4G. 9X CD-ROM performance r/w. But the DVD-RAM cannot read by other DVD-ROM and the unit cannot write CD-DA... too bad.

Good Luck
